Debunking the Myth of the Single-Vendor Network
Enterprises tend to assume that they will only ever work with a single vendor for all aspects of network management. But, recent research indicates this may no longer be the most effective approach. The study combined information from hundreds of client interactions with in-depth examination of nine organizations that introduced a second vendor into their network environments. Gartner found that adding a second networking vendor has a variety of potential benefits for organizations.
In most cases, it reduces total cost of ownership TCO by percent over five years, while effecting a lasting decrease in network complexity. The research report focused on debunking six commonly held assumptions about the risks of introducing other vendors into the mytth of a Cisco-based network.
Debunking Common Myths of the Single Vendor Network
These are summarized below. Myth 1 training and talent: There are lots of Cisco accredited network professionals available, whereas it is difficult to find certified staff for other vendors.
It is not possible to get products from two different vendors to work together reliably on a network.
A second infrastructure vendor more than doubles the complexity of network architecture. Also, give credit to vendors that help rightsize the network and focus on meeting your specific netwokr.
Adding a second vendor will double the number debuking staff needed to keep network running. Myth 5 equipment and maintenance costs: Staying loyal to one vendor creates opportunities to negotiate deals and control costs.

Myth 6 network management: Adding a second vendor means purchasing metwork lot of extra management tools. In short, the idea that multiple vendors add complexity and cost just does not hold up when examined closely.
Instead, multivendor networks help enterprises address the demand for performance-optimized bandwidth. This point is especially important given that enterprise IT infrastructures often consist of multiple, disparate networks.

Managing all of them is time-consuming and expensive. Network convergence solutions streamline operations by bringing voice, data, video and storage together. It is not so much about the vendor as it is about the solutions.
This is accomplished by dynamically adapting to requirements for providing consistent, high quality, real time delivery of applications. It is possible when the network automatically delivers resiliency, security, simplicity and adaptability. Dynamic Enterprise Featured Debun, ing. Return to the Next Generation Communications Homepage.
