Other books in this series. A Guide for Writers was an eye-opening work I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It is well organized, so you can easily locate just the information that you need, and it gives just enough detail to understand what you need to know to write about police investigations.

As far as the author’s style, it’s well-written, but I wish Lofland had added more anecdotes, because what there were of them were great, but too few and far between. These questions don’t even scratch the surface of what’s inside this treasure trove of information.

Loftland lays out everything you need to know about the life of a law enforcement official from training at the academy through the kinds of situations she may encounter in her career.

Some chapters were a drag, others left me wanting much more, but for the most procrdure this was a helpful resource. Honest and straightforward, he explains the inner workings of law enforcement without talking down to the reader, covering everything from a police officer’s duties and equipment to how fingerprinting, autopsies and DNA evidence works, to the court and prison boo, including the death penalty.
